The Hermann and Marianne Straniak Foundation was established by Hermann Straniak from Salzburg in Sarnen on December 12, 1974 as a foundation according to Art. 80 et seq. of the Swiss Civil Code (ZBG). Hermann Straniak passed away in 1975 and had designated the foundation as his universal heir. Today, the foundation has a well-endowed capital base, which is invested in real estate in Switzerland and Austria (specifically in Salzburg), as well as in securities. The annual surplus is fully assigned to the promotion of the foundation’s purpose according to specific quotas. The foundation is under the supervision of the Swiss Federal Department of Home Affairs.

According to Article 5 of the statutes of the foundation, the foundation’s purpose is:
Promoting efforts to connect the philosophical ideas of the Eastern (Asian) world with those of the occidental (Western) world, with the aim of creating a synthesis from the combination of these ideas. Supporting the goals and principles laid down in the European Convention on Human Rights, in particular the appreciation of intellectual freedom for the individual.
In addition to promoting general humanitarian efforts, the foundation also supports elderly people in need residing in the Canton of Obwalden.
